The Institute for Environmental Systems Analysis did not begin with a mandate to investigate anomalous phenomena. That area of work developed gradually, as routine projects across environmental science, engineering, field observation, and the study of complex systems produced observations that could not be resolved through the methods and explanations available at the time.
The Institute studies environments as connected systems — the relationships among physical conditions, living organisms, human activity, technology, geography, and recorded information. An ordinary explanation is never accepted merely because it is ordinary; it has to account for the observed condition.
