The Institute for Environmental Systems Analysis conducts research into environmental systems, ecological change, and the physical conditions that allow complex environments to remain stable.

The Institute is based at the Mount Baldy Complex on Mount San Antonio, California. Howard Stonecipher is the Institute’s sole Director and is responsible for its research priorities, public statements, and institutional administration.

The Institute conducts its work within the broader scientific, educational, and philosophical mission of the Church of Alienism.

The Institute’s mission is to observe environmental change, organize the available evidence, and provide careful assessments of conditions that may otherwise be misunderstood or overlooked.

Environmental events rarely have a single cause. Changes in atmosphere, water, soil, biological activity, infrastructure, and human behavior may develop independently or as parts of a larger system. The Institute studies these relationships with particular attention to gradual changes, repeated irregularities, and discrepancies that become visible only when records are compared over time.

The Institute does not regard uncertainty as a reason to force a conclusion. An unexplained result is documented, tested where possible, and retained for future comparison.

Environmental systems

The Institute examines how physical and biological conditions interact within a defined environment. This includes the movement of water and air, variations in temperature, soil and geological conditions, biological activity, and the effects of constructed systems.

Environmental change

Research considers both sudden disturbances and slow changes that may be difficult to recognize during ordinary observation. The Institute compares present conditions with earlier records to identify patterns of decline, recovery, displacement, or unexpected stability.

Human and technological effects

The Institute studies how settlement, industry, transportation, energy use, communications systems, and other forms of technological activity alter the environments in which they operate.

Ecological persistence and failure

Some environments recover after severe disturbance. Others continue to deteriorate after the apparent cause has been removed. The Institute examines the conditions associated with both outcomes and records cases in which accepted models do not adequately explain the observed result.

Anomalous environmental observations

Field records occasionally contain measurements or observations that cannot be reconciled with known local conditions. Such findings are reviewed for equipment error, contamination, incomplete records, and ordinary environmental causes.

When those explanations are insufficient, the discrepancy remains part of the record. The Institute does not confuse the absence of an explanation with the absence of an event.

Institute assessments begin with the collection and preservation of observations. Sources may include field notes, environmental measurements, photographs, maps, historical records, instrument logs, and reports from qualified observers.

Information is compared across location and time. Analysts separate direct observations from interpretation, identify gaps in the record, and state the degree of confidence that can reasonably be assigned to each conclusion.

Public reports are prepared to be clear about what was observed, what can be inferred, and what remains unresolved. Sensitive personal information and material unsuitable for public release are excluded from public documents.

The Institute revises its assessments when better evidence becomes available.

Howard Stonecipher serves as Director of the Institute for Environmental Systems Analysis.

The Director establishes research priorities, reviews Institute findings, authorizes public reports, and represents the Institute in official correspondence. No other officer or member of the Institute holds the title of Director.

The Institute has established this section of the Church of Alienism website as its official public reference.

This page will provide introductory information, institutional updates, and access to reports approved for general circulation. Public statements issued by the Director will be identified by name and date so that they may be distinguished from commentary, preliminary material, and unofficial descriptions of the Institute’s work.

The establishment of this public section does not change the Institute’s methods. Its work remains based on sustained observation, careful documentation, and the review of evidence over time.

Additional reports will be released as they are completed and approved for public distribution.
